Crosslinkers vs. Chain Extenders in Polyurethane: A Guide

Compare polyurethane crosslinkers and chain extenders, and review how functionality affects hard segments, network formation, processing and final properties.

In a polyurethane elastomer formula, the terms crosslinker and chain extender are often used interchangeably on the production floor. They are not the same. A chain extender uses two isocyanate-reactive groups to lengthen the polymer between isocyanate-terminated prepolymer molecules. A crosslinker uses three or more reactive groups to tie those chains into a covalent network [1][2].

The distinction matters for more than terminology. It changes hardness build, compression set, resilience, pot life, demold time, and whether an existing metering and mixing line can run a new B-side without modification.

Most casting and low-pressure PU machines see both classes in the prepolymer or B-side. BDO and MOCA are chain extenders. TMP, glycerol, and triethanolamine are common crosslinkers. A frequent production-floor mistake is to call MOCA a crosslinker because it is a solid aromatic diamine. MOCA is difunctional; it builds linear urea hard segments rapidly, but it does not create covalent branch points.

The Functional Difference Is Functionality, Not Reactivity

Both chain extenders and crosslinkers react with isocyanate groups. What changes the material behavior is functionality.

A chain extender is a low-molecular-weight compound, usually below 400 g/mol, with two reactive groups. It sits between prepolymer chain ends and creates a longer high-molecular-weight chain. Common diol extenders include 1,4-butanediol, diethylene glycol, and HQEE. Common diamine extenders include MOCA, Ethacure 300, and MCDEA.

A crosslinker is also a low-molecular-weight compound, but it carries three or more reactive groups. Trimethylolpropane, glycerol, triethanolamine, and pentaerythritol are typical examples. When a crosslinker reacts, it creates a branch point or covalent junction that limits chain movement.

The practical consequence is simple: a chain extender increases the linear molecular weight between network junctions, while a crosslinker increases crosslink density. Both can raise modulus, but they do so through different network architecture.

How Chain Extenders Create Ordered Hard Segments

Chain extenders build the hard segment of a segmented polyurethane elastomer. Diol extenders form urethane linkages. Diamine extenders form urea linkages. Those hard segments pack through hydrogen bonding and can form ordered domains that raise hardness, modulus, tear strength, and abrasion performance without removing all elastomeric behavior.

The reason a 90 Shore A casting roller formula often uses MOCA or a MOCA/BDO blend is not that MOCA is a crosslinker. It is that the urea hard segments form ordered domains that stiffen the part while retaining useful flexibility and toughness.

Processing differences matter immediately. BDO is liquid at room temperature but can solidify in unheated lines below roughly 20°C. MOCA is a solid at room temperature and requires heated tanks, jacketed lines, and stable recirculation, usually in the 90–115°C range. In Haifeng elastomer casting machines, typical preset windows are about 100:9–12 by weight for many prepolymer:MOCA systems and 100:3–6 for many prepolymer:BDO systems, but the final ratio must follow the prepolymer NCO content and the target isocyanate index.

Hardness is not a reliable indicator of crosslink density; a highly ordered linear system can read just as hard as a lightly crosslinked one. Shore A vs. Shore D Hardness in Polyurethane covers what the two durometer scales actually measure when a formula changes.

How Crosslinkers Add Covalent Network Junctions

A triol such as trimethylolpropane inserts a branch point into the polyurethane network. That branch point restricts chain slippage and reduces the distance the network can flow under long-term load. In practical terms, crosslinking usually improves compression set resistance, heat resistance, and resistance to solvents or oils, while reducing elongation at break and rebound resilience.

The effect is dose-dependent. A small triol level can improve set and green strength while keeping the part elastic enough for a wheel or roller. A high crosslinker level moves the material toward a stiffer, less resilient, more thermoset-like response. That is desirable for some gaskets, dampers, and compression-loaded pads, but it can make a shoe sole dead or a dynamic roller too heat-buildup-prone.

For compression-loaded sealing parts, a modest crosslink density is useful. For high-resilience footwear and dynamic rollers, chain extension usually does more of the work.

A high crosslink density reduces flow and relaxation, but if the reaction exotherm is not controlled, stress can be frozen in as shrinkage or warpage. Causes Of Shrinkage In Polyurethane Foam How To Control It covers how processing temperature and fill pattern interact with those stresses.

Compression set comparisons should always be read from the same test method. ASTM D395 and ISO 815 measure different conditions, and a number from one datasheet does not transfer directly to the other [3][5]. Hardness should likewise be read on the same durometer scale at the same part age [4].

Choosing a Formula That Runs on Your Equipment

The best chemistry is irrelevant if the machine cannot hold the process window. Each class creates different tank, pump, and mixing-head requirements.

A chain extender such as BDO needs dry, heated storage and line tracing in cold plants. MOCA requires a dedicated heated B-side with recirculation and a mixing head designed for short pot life and fast viscosity rise. A crosslinker such as TMP must often be preblended or heated, and even a small metering error in a triol stream shifts crosslink density more noticeably than the same error in a polyol stream.

The most important equipment parameter is usually ratio accuracy, not nominal throughput. If the A/B ratio drifts by a few tenths of a percent, the effective stoichiometry at the mixing head changes and the final hardness or compression set can shift before any visual defect appears. Closed-loop metering and heated recirculation are not extras in this type of formulation work; they are part of the process.

A small change in shot weight can shift fill time, exotherm history, and final hardness before an operator sees a visual defect. How To Calculate Shot Weight In Polyurethane covers how to recalculate the target when the new B-side density or ratio changes.

Before switching from BDO to TMP, or from MOCA to a diamine extender, check the existing tank temperature, pump viscosity limit, and shot-size window. If the datasheet does not resolve the question, send the candidate formula, NCO content, target hardness, and current shot weight to Info@chinahaifeng.com. We will review the metering and mixing configuration before you commit to a pilot batch.

Choosing the Right Balance for a Real Part

For a dynamic part that must return energy and resist fatigue, keep chain extension dominant and add crosslinker only as a tuning agent.

For a static sealing or compression-loaded part, a controlled crosslinker level can improve set resistance and long-term dimensional stability.

For high-temperature or oil-exposed parts, the choice often shifts toward diamine chain extenders or a modest crosslinker level, but the exact route depends on the prepolymer type, NCO content, hard segment target, and required pot life.

The decision-making sequence should be:

  • Define required hardness, resilience, compression set, and operating temperature first.
  • Select the chain extender chemistry that can hit the hardness and dynamic behavior.
  • Add a crosslinker only when the remaining gap is compression set, creep, or chemical resistance.
  • Recalculate the mixing ratio from equivalent weight and NCO content.
  • Confirm the B-side temperature, viscosity, pot life, shot size, and mold cycle before scaling.

A formula is production-ready only when the machine can hold the ratio and temperature window across a full shift, not when a single hand-cast sample passes.

Talk to an Equipment Engineer Before You Commit

Formulation changes fail less often because of chemistry than because the machine cannot hold the process window. If you are evaluating a switch between chain extenders and crosslinkers, send our process engineers the current formula, NCO content, target hardness, part drawing, cycle time, and desired output.

We will review the requirement from the metering pump, tank heating, mixing head, and mold carrier side, not from a one-line datasheet.

FAQ

Is MOCA a crosslinker?

No. MOCA is a diamine with two N–H reactive groups, so its nominal functionality is two. It builds linear urea hard segments and changes cure speed and hardness, but it does not create covalent crosslink junctions [1].

Which is better for shoe soles, a chain extender or a crosslinker?

Most high-resilience shoe-sole systems are built on chain extenders such as BDO or MOCA, often with a small amount of triol to tune compression set and green strength. The correct choice depends on density, hardness, and cycle time, not on a simple ranking of one over the other.

Can I use a small amount of TMP as a drop-in replacement for BDO?

No. TMP is trifunctional and creates a different network structure. The mixing ratio must be recalculated from equivalent weight and isocyanate index, and the viscosity, gel time, and exotherm will change.

Why does a harder part not always have more crosslinking?

Hardness can come from ordered hard domains in a linear chain-extended system. A highly phase-separated or hydrogen-bonded linear system can be harder than a lightly crosslinked one [4].

Which equipment parameter deserves the most attention?

Metering ratio accuracy and B-side temperature control. Both determine stoichiometry at the mixing head, and a small drift in the curative or crosslinker stream changes hardness and compression set far more than the same drift in a polyol stream.
